Under Boko Haram control:
A town is defined as being in this state with reports that security forces no longer have a presence after an attack. Boko Haram may “raise its flag”, but not actually reside in or administer the town. With reports of the return of security forces a town is removed from this category.
Disclaimer: this work does not claim to capture all events due to the nature of the often slow and contradictory emanation of information from affected areas.
Maps that appear hear are aimed at tracking the main events and areas of influence of the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency. These maps are not 100% accurate. They represent a snapshot of the current situation (with appropiate delays due to cross-checks and verifications) and slight errors are necessary included.
Their genesis is due to a prevailing lack of accurate information documenting developments on the ground and the detrimental effect of biased reporting on gaining a true reflection of the situation.
This exercise is done based primarily based on secondary sources (local and international media) and cross-checked with primary sources where available which remain confidential for security reasons.
